I have always loved Valentine’s Day, not because of the romance, but because it’s a day to celebrate the ones you love, including your kids. When my three kids were little, we started some traditions that we still do today. We may not always have them on Valentine’s Day due to sharing custody with my ex, but that doesn’t stop us. We can celebrate any day we want.

First, we always go out to dinner at a restaurant. The kids get to pick, usually Chinese food or sushi. Even though they are teenagers now, we make sure it’s a night when everyone can come and we won’t be rushed. If an evening dinner doesn’t work, we have lunch instead.

I always get my kids a little gift, something they need or something they’ve been wanting. One year, I got my daughter a cosmetic bag with hearts on it. My oldest loves gift cards for his favorite restaurants or car supplies. My youngest loves anything related to plants and gardening. I enjoy picking out something for them every year and I usually treat myself too.

We also have candy as a tradition. When we arrive at the restaurant and sit down to eat, I hand out their gifts and candy.

A few years ago, my teens started giving me gifts on Valentine’s Day, which was really sweet and unexpected. Sometimes it’s flowers and sometimes it’s something homemade. It makes me so happy to see my kids, especially as teens, enjoying this family tradition.

Valentine’s Day is a great holiday to do something for my kids without the stress we feel during Christmas. No matter what gifts or where we eat, it always feels special.
