Bhutan has been on my bucket list for a whole year and that’s where my family and I went this year. People often wonder if Bhutan is child-friendly, and my answer is that all destinations are child-friendly. Other kids are being raised there. It’s all about how you plan and execute your trip.
During our visit, we explored Thimpu, Punakha, and Paro in Bhutan. If you want to know more about our trip, you can watch the detailed video on our YouTube channel.
Now let’s address some questions I have been asked about visiting Bhutan:
1. Do I Need A Visa For Bhutan?
No, Indians don’t need a visa for Bhutan. However, there is a SDF charge levied, which we paid in Rupees. The current charge is Rs 1200 per night for Indian adults and 50% for kids under 12. Check the website for SDF charges applicable to your country. Indian currency is accepted everywhere, but the change returned will be in Bhutanese currency (NU).
2. What’s the Best Time To Visit Bhutan?
The best time to visit Bhutan is between October and December. January and February are cold, so if you enjoy the cold weather, it can work well. Otherwise, you can plan your visit for March to June.
3. Best Way To Reach Bhutan
You can reach Bhutan by flight from Delhi, Kolkata, or Bagdogra, or you can travel by road from Siliguri. Since we were traveling from Mumbai, we chose to stay overnight at an airport hotel in Kolkata. If you choose to fly via Bhutan Airlines or Drukair, I recommend choosing seats on the left side of the plane facing the pilot to see the best views of Mount Everest.
4. How Do I Choose Hotels In Bhutan?
When choosing hotels in Bhutan, look for centrally located ones or those with a great heritage. Don’t just go after popular names, but choose a hotel that appeals to you. During our visit, we stayed at the Norkhil Boutique Hotel in Thimpu and the Zhiwa Ling Hotel in Paro.
5. How To Select A Good Guide?
If you are traveling with a tour operator or hotel, they can arrange a guide and car for you. It’s recommended to go through verified and certified tour guides in Bhutan or seek help from certified and verified tour operators. These guides have knowledge about the country’s culture, history, and attractions. You can find a list of certified tour operators and guides on their respective websites.
6. Can We Meet The King & Queen Of Bhutan?
Meeting the King and Queen of Bhutan is a rare opportunity and is generally reserved for official or diplomatic events.
7. Tiger’s Nest – Permits & Charges & All You Need To Know
You don’t need a permit to visit Tiger’s Nest, but you need to pay Nu. 1000/- to visit the monastery. The trek to Tiger’s Nest is moderately difficult and takes 4-5 hours if you are not an experienced hiker.
8. Cultural Activities To Enjoy In Bhutan With The Kids
Bhutan offers wonderful cultural experiences rooted in its rich traditions. One must-try cultural activity is watching traditional Bhutanese dances, such as mask dances, Zhungdra and Boedra dances, and Rigsar Dance. These dances showcase the country’s culture and folklore. You can plan your visit around major festivals like Tshechu to witness a broader showcase of traditional dances.
