Once your baby turns six months old, it’s time to start trying out new foods. According to the Department of Health, your baby should only have breastmilk or formula milk until they’re six months old. This is because they get all the nutrition they need from these milks. Also, it’s not safe to start giving your baby solid foods before they’re four months old. Their stomachs are still growing and can’t handle anything other than breastmilk or formula milk, which could make them sick.
Once your baby turns six months old, they will start showing signs that they’re ready to start eating solid foods. These signs include being able to sit up with support, having good control over their head and neck, being interested in the food you’re eating, and being hungry even after drinking milk. They will also be able to coordinate their hands, eyes, and mouth well and can swallow food.
In their first month of eating solid foods, start with easy-to-digest and non-allergic foods like fruit and vegetable purees, stewed apple, and cereals. Only introduce one new food at a time and wait a few days before introducing another one. By the end of six months, you can start giving them more options like khichdi, porridge, a variety of cereals, idli, dosa, and soups. However, avoid giving them honey, salt, sugar, or cow’s milk before they turn one year old.
